While affirmations aren't magic, and they won't instantly change your life, they can help shift your mindset, reduce negative self-talk, and encourage positive change.

What Are Affirmations?

Some affirmations may feel a little like "fake it 'til you make it." That's OK. The goal isn't to deny reality — it's to reinforce healthier ways of thinking as you grow into the person you want to become.

What Are "I Am" Affirmations?

"I am" affirmations are simply affirmations that start with "I am." They remind you of who you want to be. They can help you focus on your goals as you work toward them.

They can describe who you are ("I am confident") or something you are doing ("I am building healthy habits one choice at a time").

Some affirmations may feel a little like "fake it 'til you make it." That's OK. Repeating healthy beliefs can help reinforce the person you're working to become, especially when you pair your affirmations with positive action.

How to Use Positive "I Am" Affirmations

The goal of using affirmations is for them to influence your thoughts, feelings, and behavior.

Choose one or two affirmations that resonate with you and repeat them throughout the day. You can also combine affirmations. For example: "I am lovable and capable."

You might say them aloud, write them in a journal, or place them on sticky notes or notecards where you'll see them often.

Many people find it especially helpful to practice affirmations shortly after waking up in the morning and again just before going to sleep at night. These are times when your subconscious mind may be more receptive to the suggestions contained in your affirmations. (Something I learned from my hypnotherapy training.)
